You started using Google Allo on a phone and now want to change to a new device that you bought. Google Allo however can be installed and active only on one device per account. So, how do you switch from one device to another ?
Phone Number and Google Account – The Connection
Allo is connected to your phone number and also your Google account. However, the phone number is your login ID or user name for Allo. That is how you login to Allo account. Other users find you on Allo using your phone number too.
Allo is connected to your Google account so that the Assistant in Allo can give you answers and suggestions, save reminders and complete actions based on the information available on your Google account.
It is also used to provide the end-to-end encryption available on Incognito chats.
You can have multiple Google Allo accounts connected to a single Google account. However you can have only one device per account active at any time, when I say account, I am referring to your phone number.
You cannot have the same phone number working with Allo on two different devices.
So, if you want to change from one device to another, to carry your Allo account with you, take one thing with you to the new device:
Your SIM card.
Yes, your SIM card carries your phone number with you and activates that on your new device. The Allo account on the other device should now stop working automatically, because, you guessed it, the phone number has moved to another device.
Currently there are no cloud backup solutions for Allo. The Google account connection should make it easier for Google to implement this feature and we hope to see this in future versions.
