I recently read an article on the NYT by my favorite tech writer David Pogue. It talks about things that people found when they checked the “other” folder of Facebook messages. Many didn’t even know that such a folder existed.
After the Gmail’s new categorized inbox came out, same thing has started happening, but on a lower degree. Some emails that I see very late because it went to another tab, was actually important for me.
It is worse on mobile. The Gmail app does not alert me when email arrives in any other folder other than the main inbox. This made me thinking about disabling this feature for now, and see how it goes. Here is how I did it
Disable Auto Categorization on Gmail Web
- Click the settings (gear) icon on the top right corner
- Choose “Configure Inbox”
- Uncheck all options in the list
Done! You Gmail should now refresh without any category!
Disabling Gmail Categories on the Android App
- Go to Settings and select your Gmail account
- Touch Inbox categories
- Under Categories to enable un-check everything
- Go back to your Inbox and refresh!
Note: Any change you make on the desktop will sync to your mobile device, and vice versa.
